RAMP Certification Overview

The Responsible Alcohol Management Program (RAMP) Certification in Pennsylvania is a voluntary certification established by legislation on June 18, 2001. It provides incentives for licensees who complete all five components of the program, offering training and resources to alcohol-serving establishments and their employees. Successfully completing the program grants a two-year state-approved certification, promoting responsible alcohol management and service. The four prerequisites for obtaining RAMP certification include Owner/Manager Training, Server/Seller Training, New Employee Orientation, and Signage.


Owner/Manager Training is the first requirement, involving training for those responsible for the daily operations and policies of the establishment. This training can be completed online or in a classroom, though initial training must be done in a classroom setting as of October 1


The Server/Seller Training component focuses on training at least 50% of the alcohol service staff, including those who serve, sell alcohol, or check IDs. This training is valid for two years and must be completed with a score of 80% or better. It is essential for maintaining RAMP certification and is mandatory for various alcohol service personnel, including those at off-premises events and establishments with wine expanded permits. Classroom and online training options are available to meet this requirement, ensuring comprehensive coverage of best practices in alcohol service.


New Employee Orientation and Signage are the final components of RAMP certification. New employees must receive orientation within 30 days of hire, covering essential policies and procedures related to alcohol service. Additionally, establishments must display signage that promotes responsible alcohol service, including information on acceptable forms of ID and the refusal of service to minors and intoxicated patrons. These measures help maintain a consistent standard of service and compliance, benefiting both the establishment and the community.
